Grain exports from Crimea: Is impossible possible?

2014-08-05 10:50:34

Despite a number of restrictions imposed by both Ukraine and the world community due to the annexation of the Crimean Autonomous Republic by the Russian Federation, Crimea does supply its commodities, in particular grain, to the world market.

Officially impossible

According to Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor), 39.858 KMT of export grain and processed products have been shipped to Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey since June 22, 2014. At the same time, the official authorities of the supposed importing countries did not confirm the fact of import, referring to the fulfillment of the EU sanctions of March 26, 2014 “On restrictions on import of goods originating from Crimea and Sevastopol to the EU in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol.” As applied to shipping, this implies that any sea transportation of goods produced or finished in Crimea and the city of Sevastopol is illicit, irrespective of the ship’s flag and the nationality of its owner.
