Russian Grain Harvest Up 52% Over Last Year at 97 Million Tons

Russia's bunker-weight grain harvest is currently 52% up on this time last year.

Russia harvested 96.9 million tonnes of grain in bunker weight from 96.7% of the area under grains as of November 7. That figure is 33.2 million tonnes more than in the same period of the drought year of 2010, but 5 million tonnes below the bumper year of 2009, according to Russian Agriculture Ministry data made available to Interfax.

Specialists estimate the clean weight harvest was 90 million tonnes, against 60.9 million tonnes in the same period last year.

Grain and legumes crops were harvested on an area of 41.7 million hectares. Yield was 23.2 centners per hectare, against 19.2 in 2010 and 23.9 in 2009. At the moment, farmers are harvesting late crops, mainly cereals.

Farmers in the Southern Federal District gathered 22.9 million tonnes of grain from 97.9% of the area under grains, against 19.5 million tonnes in the same period of 2010 and 20.7 million tonnes in the same period of 2009. Yield in the Southern Federal District increased to 33.7 centners per hectare, from 31 in 2010 and 30.8 in 2009. In the Krasnodar Territory, 55.6 centners of grain per hectare were gathered, against 49 in 2010 and 45.9 in 2009.

Farmers in the North Caucasus gathered 9.6 million tonnes of grain on 93.3% of the area under grains, against 8.5 million tonnes in the same period of 2010 and 8.3 million tonnes in the same period of 2009. Yield grew to 37.3 centners per hectare, against 33 in 2010 and 31.2 in 2009.

A large part of the grain harvest - 8.2 million tonnes against 6.8 million tonnes in 2010 and 6.9 million tonnes in 2009 - came from the Stavropol Territory. Yield in that area rose to 39.2 centners per hectare, compared to 33.3 in 2010 and 31.8 in 2009.

Farmers in the Volga Federal District, who were hit hardest by drought last year, harvested almost as much grain as in 2009 - they threshed 22.2 million tonnes compared to 22.9 million tonnes in 2009. In the same period of last year, they harvested 6.8 million tonnes of grain. Crops were gathered on 95.2% of the area under grains.

In the Siberian Federal District, grain was collected from 98.6% of the planted farmland - 15.8 million tonnes, compared to 14.4 million tonnes in 2010 and 20.4 million tonnes in 2009. Yield was 16.1 centners per hectare against 15.7 in 2010 and 19.7 in 2009. In the Urals, grain was gathered from 96.4% of the area under grains - 7.7 million tonnes against 3.5 million tonnes in 2010 and 5.7 million tonnes in 2009. Yield grew to 21.7 centners per hectare against 13.5 in 2010 and 16.3 in 2009.

In the Central Federal District, 17.5 million tonnes of grain were collected from 97.1% of the area, against 10.3 million tonnes in 2010 and 22.5 million tonnes in 2009. Yield was 25.2 centners per hectare, compared to 18.8 in 2010 and 30.2 in 2009.

Farmers in the Northwestern Federal District collected 566,000 tonnes of grain against 500,800 tonnes in 2010 and 681,600 tonnes in 2009. Grain was collected from 89.4% of the crop area. In the Far East, 598,900 tonnes of grain were gathered on 91.8% of the harvested area, against 284,600 tonnes in 2010 and 644,000 tonnes in 2009.
